    What's the role? 

    ETA are a Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health (MEP) engineering design consultancy delivering projects across complex buildings, including healthcare, research, education and commercial sectors.

     The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of coordinated compliant and technically robust mechanical building services designs. The role will include producing and reviewing calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, schedules and technical submissions across all RIBA stages.

     The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of allocated projects or work packages, manage day-to-day technical delivery, coordinate with internal and external design disciplines, attend client and design team meetings, and support junior and intermediate engineers through technical guidance and mentoring. The role requires a strong technical understanding of mechanical building services design, relevant industry standards, healthcare guidance, and the ability to deliver projects to agreed time, cost and quality requirements.

     

    Working Conditions -  37.5hrs per week , Monday - Friday . Hybrid working (typically 3 days office, 2 days home) 

     

    Key Responsibilities: 

     

    • Lead the design and specification of mechanical building services systems including heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water, drainage and medical gases.
    • Develop mechanical design solutions from feasibility and concept stage through to detailed design, tender, construction and handover.
    • Prepare and check design calculations, equipment selections, technical schedules and design submissions.
    • Produce and review technical specifications, design reports, design narratives and tender/construction documentation.
    • Coordinate mechanical services layouts, schematics and plantroom arrangements with CAD/Revit technicians and wider design teams.
    • Undertake technical reviews of drawings, specifications, calculations and contractor submissions.
    • Attend and contribute to client meetings, design team meetings, technical workshops and contractor coordination meetings.
    • Undertake site surveys, inspections and condition reports, including recording existing services and identifying technical risks.
    • Coordinate mechanical design requirements with electrical, public health, architectural, structural and specialist design disciplines.
    • Liaise with contractors, suppliers and manufacturers to resolve technical queries and support appropriate equipment selections.
    • Ensure designs are developed in accordance with relevant UK Building Regulations, CIBSE Guides, British Standards, HTMs, HBNs and project-specific requirements.
    • Support the preparation of fee proposals, scope of services, project programmes and technical input to bids were required.
    • Monitor design progress against agreed deliverables, programme and budget, highlighting risks or resource concerns to the project lead.
    • Respond to RFIs, technical queries and design changes during construction stage.
    • Support commissioning, witnessing, practical completion and handover activities where required.
    • Mentor and support junior/intermediate engineers, including reviewing their work and helping develop their technical knowledge.
    • Work towards, or maintain, Chartered Engineer status through CIBSE, IMechE, IHEEM or equivalent professional body.

     

    What we’re looking for: 

    • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
    • Professional membership of CIBSE, IMechE, IHEEM or equivalent.
    • Chartered Engineer status, or actively working towards chartership, is desirable.
    •  Strong experience in mechanical building services design (consultancy or design-and-build) is essential
    • Experience leading mechanical design packages on building services projects.
    • Experience of healthcare, research, education or other complex building environments is desirable.
    • Good understanding of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE Guides, British Standards, HTMs and HBNs.
    • Ability to prepare and review design calculations, technical schedules, specifications and reports.
    • Experience using or coordinating with design software such as IES, Hevacomp, Revit, AutoCAD and Excel.
    • Ability to coordinate mechanical design information with other disciplines.
    • Strong technical problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Good commercial awareness, including understanding of scope, programme, fees and change control.
    • Ability to mentor junior and intermediate engineers.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks and work effectively under deadlines.
    • Confident attending meetings and representing the mechanical discipline with clients and design teams.
