Senior Mechanical Product Engineer

Job Introduction

To design, prepare & complete documentation packages including drawings in 3D CAD for Medium Voltage Switchgear Products (up to 36kV ac, 1.5kV dc).

Oversee team activities, be a business point of contact, represent the team and stand in for the Design Authority when required.

To deliver support to the activities of the Switchgear Engineering Department, and other business departments, to meet product specifications and project objectives.

To develop effective working relationship with customers by representing the engineering team and the company.

Role Responsibility

  • Produce Mechanical Designs of Medium Voltage Switchgear (up to 36kV ac, 1.5kV dc).
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings in accordance with the product specification.
  • Produce Bills of materials and upload onto the Sage X3 ERP system
  • Check and approve supplier technical offer and drawings.
  • Ensure that all designs and applied technology is compliant with the relevant technical, safety and environmental standards and codes of practice.
  • Working with the wider Engineering team to achieve the required specifications.
  • Develop best practice for switchgear designs and processes
  • Assist with continuous improvement of switchgear design and optimisation.
  • Maintain understanding of engineering processes, Quality systems and awareness of HSE requirements.
  • Produce Technical details for O&M manuals, installation guides and other project documentation.
  • Produce Technical Datasheets and Compliance documents.
  • Support Quality on supplier developments and inspections.
  • Undertake CPD to maintain professional competence.
  • Represent the Design Authority when required at internal daily production meetings and external  customer meetings.
  • Attend site visits where required.
  • Attend and represent the company at external technical conferences.
  • Check and approve mechanical design work produced by the team.
  • Escalate mechanical design issues to Design Authority and other stakeholders and support with route cause analysis and remedial action.
  • Liaise with Quality in order to complete ISO and other Audits.
  • Support the Engineering Manager and Innovation Programme Manager on product development activity.
  • Identify constraints and exploit opportunities for the development and transfer of technology within own chosen field.
  • Prepare, present and agree design recommendations, with appropriate analysis of risk, and taking account of cost, quality, safety, reliability, appearance, fitness for purpose, security, intellectual property (IP) constraints and opportunities, and environmental impact.
  • Lead on preparing and agreeing any project plans.

The Ideal Candidate

Qualifications

  • An accredited Bachelors or honours degree in engineering or technology, or appropriate experience in lieu
  • Experience of Medium Voltage switchgear design
  • Demonstrable experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks would be advantageous)
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer (or working towards) would be an advantage, with a commitment to continuing professional development with a suitable professional organisation (such as the IET or IMechE).
  • Strong communication skills

Systems/Knowledge

  • Strong background in Mechanical Design.
  • Experience in Medium Voltage (up to 38kV ac) Switchgear design will be an advantage
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards (BS, EN, IEC and IEEE)
  • Knowledge of type testing and working with external laboratories
  • SolidWorks 3D CAD Software knowledge, or similar 3D CAD
  • COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS or similar simulation tools
  • Sage X3 ERP (or similar ERP systems) and BoM management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities.
  • Good IT skills in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Personal Attributes

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks.
  • Experience in PDM system is preferable
  • Good IT Skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook etc)
  • Able to work to high standards or quality, precision and consistency.
  • A flexible and adaptable attitude to the completion of work with the ability to work proactively and independently.
  • Excellent organisation and planning skills, attention to details and the ability to work to tight deadlines
