Principal Electrical Design Engineer

Job Introduction

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join this privately owned and expanding Design Consultancy Company to take responsibility for the effective deployment of staff and resources for Design activities across the business (Battery Energy Storage BESS Projects, Power Generation Projects, M&E Services etc.) and the provision of technical leadership in design activities.

The company has recently been awarded Framework Contracts in the UK for the BESS framework covering new substations, upgrades and renewals.

Role Responsibility

  •  Report to the Engineering Manager and will be
  • Responsible for managing and co-ordinating the use of internal, agency and sub-contract design staff to meet the needs of the business.
  • Liaising with Project Management staff to provide design services in line with project programme requirements.
  • Liaising with the Commissioning Manager to establish parameters for site testing requirements based on design specifications. 
  • Ensuring that designs have been completed in good time prior to site activities.
  • You will have line manager responsibility for Design and CAD Engineers and will be required to manage the quality assurance process in the design/ check/ approval process.  
  • Act as the Company’s technical authority on design issues.
  • Carry out Contractors Responsible Engineer and Contractors Engineering Manager roles.
  • Take responsibility for identifying areas where staff training and development is required.
  • Client interface/meetings.
  • Participating in Technical/Safety Audits.
  • Providing bid/tender assistance and sales support. 
  • Providing external audits support.

The Ideal Candidate

You will hold an Electrical Power Engineering qualification; minimum degree level and Chartered Electrical Engineer status would be highly desirable. You will have a broad knowledge of power engineering plant and equipment (i.e. Transformers, Switchgear, cables, protection schemes), will have a good track record of taking responsibility for design activities on large traction power projects and will be able to demonstrate effective man management experience with engineering staff.

You will be joining a company who provide a complete, comprehensive and cost-effective service to users of high-voltage distribution systems up to 132kV.  Unmatched expertise in high voltage applications means that they can undertake work at any stage in the life of a power distribution system, from first conception through successful commissioning to subsequent regular maintenance. ICP/DNO design experience (Primary and Grid substations) would be required, as would Health and Safety experience or qualifications.
