Primary Design Engineer

Job Introduction

Reporting to the Design Manager and working as part of a dedicated multi-disciplined Engineering team, the ideal candidate should have a minimum qualification of HNC/ HND/ BEng/ MSc (tbc) in Electrical Engineering (or similarly biased course), with experience in Autodesk AutoCAD (and/or experience in utilising similar CAD software). With some level of experience in the following:

  • Civils – co-ordinating/ liaising with Civil Consultant/ Engineers.
  • Cables,
  • Plant and ancillary equipment,
  • Primary design,
  • Earthing – co-ordinating/ liaising with external Consultants.
  • Protection & Control – co-ordinating/ liaising with Protection & Control Engineers.
  • Real Time Solutions (RTS) – co-ordinating/ liaising with RTS Engineers.
  • System Studies – co-ordinating/ liaising with external Consultants.
  • Surveys – co-ordinating/ liaising with external Consultants/ Contractors.

Role Responsibility

  • Check/ review design related information provided by Client/ Engineers. 
  • Produce/ update design documentation, comprising of, but not limited to:
    • Design Intent Document,
    • Designer Risk Assessment,
    • Cable Rating Report,
    • Material Schedule,
    • Control Drawing List / Engineering Transmittal,
    • Pre-Construction Information,
    • Client specific requirements – Such as Project Scoping, Works Information documentation,
  • Produce/ update CAD drawings from details/ drawings provided, or produced from site mark-ups comprising of, but not limited to:
    • Civils; Building Layouts, Site Work Layouts; Existing, Enabling, Proposed.
    • CDM Layouts.
    • Cable Installation; Cable Routes & Trench Sections.
    • Primary Plant; Clearance, Layouts, Elevations, Single Line Diagram.
    • Busbar & connection arrangements,
  • Produce new CAD drawings from Client brief/ scope of works.
  • Comply with the Engineering Design Manual.
  • Co-ordinate and manage own workload for efficient delivery of design documentation / drawings, achieving Client key milestones and working to programme.
  • Ensuring the information within design documentation / drawings is to a high quality and standard, while maintaining pace with project timescales.
  • Always mindful of obligations with regards to CDM Regulations, striving to continually eliminate Health & Safety risks in design, and financial risks during construction.
  • Support the Design Manager in the management of the design phase of projects, which includes quotation, ordering, attending meetings / site visits and reporting.
  • Support the Design Manager in the production and continual development of design documentation and standards.
  • Support other acquisitions/ businesses within Brush IPM.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience and history of design delivery; with regards due diligence, quality and time.
  • Self-motivated with good time management skills.
  • Capable of working within a team, as well as autonomously/remote while meeting Client expectations, working to programme, and achieving tight deadlines.
  • An in-depth knowledge of all aspects of a Construction project and be an efficient document manager.
  • Experience and knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 – particularly Principal Designer role.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to present ideas effectively, and to evaluate and interpret the ideas of others, whether Client or team member.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Soft skills; Effective communication, analytical/ logical approach to project work and problem solving, adaptability, personal time management.
  • Systems & Software; AutoCAD, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, Teams.
