Job Introduction

Summary:  Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties: 

Role Responsibility

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Prepare working sketches for the illustration of product appearance.
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns and/or positions, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Set up and operate metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, and cutting equipment.
  • Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
  • Dismantle machines or equipment, using hand tools and power tools, in order to examine parts for defects and replace defective parts where needed.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools.
  • Installs machined replacement or repaired parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance, as well as, installation of new equipment.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Confers with engineers, shop personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Confer with numerical control programmers in order to check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly, and that output will meet specifications.
  • Establish work procedures for fabricating new structural products, using a variety of metalworking machines.
  • Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics.
  • Evaluate experimental procedures, and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.
  • Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
  • Install experimental parts and assemblies such as hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants, and batteries into machines and mechanisms.
  • Test experimental models under simulated operating conditions for such purposes as development, standardization, and feasibility of design.
  • Overtime is a requirement as-needed which may include, weekdays, weekends or holidays.

Education and/or Experience:

Associate's Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or at least one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Machining Skills:

Able to effectively use machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Current driver's license

Valid COATS Card

Computer Skills:

Minimal computer skills required.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Must physically be able to operate and/or assist around equipment and/or machinery without violating the restrictions posted in or around the work area.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
