Commercial Operations Engineer

Job Introduction

As part of the Commercial Operations team, the Commercial Operations Engineer will be focused on Tendering BRUSH’s transformer portfolio. 

The Tender Engineer will be responsible for managing all tender generation, and internal hand-over (to the Operations team) activities, leveraging existing processes and tools to deliver compelling and compliant solutions in a timely manner whilst at all times managing and mitigating technical, commercial, and contractual risks. 

The Tender Engineer will coordinate a cross-functional team through influence and collaboration to ensure both the technical and commercial requirements are accurately captured and translated.

This will include reviewing the tender opportunities, compiling tender responses, cost roll-ups, supporting the opportunity pricing, commercial administrative support, and preparation of terms & conditions (including negotiations) in compliance with external and internal tendering requirements.    

In a timely manner, ensure tenders encompass all technical and commercial aspects while positioning them in the most competitive way.

As part of the Commercial Operation team, the Commercial Operations Engineer will be a critical element in the performance of the Commercial team. 

Role Responsibility

  • Leverage the existing processes and tools to deliver compelling and compliant tenders in a timely manner.
  • Manage all tender activities.
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the tender and for winning business with integrity.
  • Identify and capture technical and commercial risks in accordance with the defined commercial policies.
  • In collaboration with the various functional teams, produce the required tender inputs, including cost roll-ups, slot planning, and terms & conditions mark-ups.
  • In preparation for any required business approval, identify risk mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate tendering inputs/ outputs with the various internal support functions.
  • In conjunction with the respective sales team develop an opportunity pricing strategy that reflects the customer value while fulfilling the given business objectives. 
  • In compliance with the define commercial policies, seek and document the necessary business approvals.
  • Ensure that risk/ governance processes are documented and followed.
  • Generate and submit customer tenders/ proposals. 
  • Actively participate in customer negotiations to appropriately resolve technical and commercial issues to secure the project order. 
  • Prepare and lead the associated purchase order handover process.
  • Manage customer and opportunity records.
  • Maintain the internal opportunity tracking software (Customer Sales Forcast) .
  • Capture customer and market feedback.
  • Support the enhancement of the commercial processes, tools and policies to enable consistent and efficient pre-tender, tender, customer negotiation, and internal hand-over (to the operation/ project management teams).
  • Participate in ‘capture teams’ for strategic opportunities (such as frameworks or complex / cross-business opportunities)
  • Support strategic cross-function initiatives.
  • Update the pre-qualification documentation database, join the orders forecasting process, participate in commercial efficiencies initiatives, and support external and internal audits.
  • Provide inputs for the improvement of commercial templates and tools.

The Ideal Candidate

Qualifications:

  • Higher National Certificate or higher
  • 3+ experience in sales, management or operations within the energy management landscape
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering

Skills / Knowledge:

  • Ability to influence and collaboration skills
  • Being able to translate business strategies into commercial actions
  • Financial acumen
  • Solution selling experience
  • Experience in setting commercial strategies in a complex opportunity landscape
  • In-depth experience in RFQ preparation and responses
  • Hands-on experience in developing technical, commercial (including pricing) and terms & conditions negotiations
  • Product knowledge/experience of switchgear, transformer and associated equipment
  • Specific knowledge and experience relating to power transmission / distribution design and associated power network architecture
  • Proven experience in technical and commercial customer presentation / workshops (solutions, products and services focused)
  • Knowledge of DNO / IDNO recommendations rules & regulations
  • Minimum fluent in English (Speak, Read & Write)

Experience:

  • Experience in direct customer facing roles  
  • Working knowledge of the energy management landscape
  • Field Sales, Field Engineering or Engineering experience
